Selecting a Topic
Before selecting a topic, it’s important to determine the purpose of your blog and your target market. According to the author, “One of the biggest, most common mistakes people make when starting a blog is that they don’t define their target market! So their content, rather than helping people, get’s lost in a sea of content pushed out online every single day,” and I definitely agree with this. So, let’s assume you have your target market figured out, how do you come up with a great topic?
One of the easiest ways to come up with a great topic is to search social media to see what is hot and what type of information people are looking for. I personally like to use Twitter and Facebook for this. You can take one of three approaches to complete this step.
- Review your own feed to see what people are talking about and where your audience may need some help
- Do a search based on your target audience and find out what is going on with this group
- Simply ask your target audience what they want

Searching for Keywords & Related Articles
A good way to get started with your keyword research is to “Google” the competition. Once you have an idea for a blog topic, it’s a good idea to find out what your competition is writing about and how they are delivering the message. But, there is more to be gleaned from your competitors’ posts than their writing style. You can also find out the SEO structure of their article and make yours even better. This can be done with a free tool for your browser called “SEOQuake.” This is a free extension that can be installed in your Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari browser.
Once you have some keywords in mind, one of the easiest ways to find the right keywords to use in your article is by using the Google AdWords Tool called Keyword Planner. All you will need is a Google account to use the tool. Once you are set up, enter your potential keywords into the planner based on your topic. Based on that search you want to find keywords that you can use naturally in your article and that have relatively high “Average Monthly Searches” and low competition.
Finally, don’t forget to Google your keywords one last time to gather some high quality articles you can quote in your post. I typically copy and paste the URLs for articles I might want to use and place them at the bottom of my draft post.
Create an Outline
Your post outline will depend on the type of post you are writing. I tend to like the “how-to post” or “list-based post,” as these are fairly easy to construct. For a how to post, your outline might look something like this…
- Introduction to the problem
- Opening summary paragraph
- Solution steps
- Step 1
- Step 2
- Conclusion and closing paragraph
- Sign off
- Call to action
I recommend keeping the outline simple because it’s easier to write and easier to read and follow.
Many people wanting to learn how to write a blog post like to start with this step. However, this is a good way to get distracted quickly and wind up with an article that is hard to read, doesn’t make much sense and takes twice as long to write.
The one thing I can’t really teach is how to write, so just stick to your outline and start typing. Make sure to use references from other top articles as discussed above and you will be just fine. Also, don’t forget to save your draft frequently so you don’t lose your work. Finally, proofread your article at least twice before you hit the “Publish” button.
